The department of telecommunications, the ministry of communications of the Government of India has come up with a portal namely- The CEIR or the central equipment identity register. CEIR is a portal launched with the aim of reducing the counterfeit of the mobile device market, fraud and theft, and all problems related to mobile devices by keeping a database of all the mobile operators through the IMEI numbers of the devices. The portal also makes sure that if a number is blacklisted, it cannot be used by any other mobile network operator. The portal has many benefits and facilities available online, some of which are Blocking stolen/lost mobile, Un-blocking any device, Know your mobile, etc.

How to block stolen/lost devices on the CEIR Portal

In case your mobile device gets lost or stolen, you can now block your device online on the CEIR Portal by following the steps mentioned below-

  • File a report at your nearest police station and keep a copy of the report.
  • Get your SIM re-issued by the service providers as you will need the number for formalities.
  • Visit the official website of the Central equipment identity register that is ceir.gov.in
  • On the homepage, look for the option of “Block stolen/lost mobile” and click on it.
  • You will be redirected to a new page with a form for requesting to block your device.
Block Stolen or lost mobiles on the CEIR portal
  • Fill in details of the device like mobile number (both if dual sim), Brand, Model, IMEI 1 and 2, Invoice copy, etc.
  • Then fill in the details of the lost device like Date, place, state, district, police station, etc.
  • Finally, fill in the details of the owner like name, address, ID proof, email, and then verify the number by entering OTP sent by text.
  • Put a tick mark in the declaration box and submit the form, You will receive a request ID which will be used in the future for unblocking or any other purpose.

Know your mobile (KYM) Service

KYM or Know your mobile is a service available on the CEIR portal which enables the people to know the validity of the devices they are about to purchase through the database of IMEI existing in the portal. The IMEI number of mobile devices is available on the Box of the device, the invoice of the device, it can be checked by dialing *#06# on your mobile device, or you can check the IMEI number of your device in the settings under the option of “about device”. The IMEI number can then be used to track the validity of the device, which if found blacklisted should not be used.

KYM through SMS

  • Type KYM “15 digit IMEI device number”
  • Send it to 14422.

KYM through Application

  • Download the KYM app from the play store on android devices and from the app store on IOS devices.
  • Sign in on the app with your mobile number and verify it from the OTP sent
  • Enter the IMEI number in the space provided and submit it.
  • The validity will be displayed on the screen.

KYM through Web portal

  • Visit the official web portal of CEIR
  • On the homepage, look for the option of “web portal” under the KYM column.
  • Click on the option of “click here”
  • You will be redirected to another page where you need to authenticate your identity by entering your mobile number and entering the OTP sent to it.
  • On the next page, enter the IMEI number of your device to check its validity and submit it. The validity will be displayed on the screen.

How to check Request status

  • Visit the official website of the Central equipment identity register that is ceir.gov.in
  • On the homepage, look for the option of “Check request status” and click on it.

  • A new page will open wherein enter the request ID which you received after filling the request form.
  • Click on submit and the status of your request to block your device will be displayed on the screen.

Unblock device IMEI on the CEIR Portal

  • Visit the official website of the Central equipment identity register that is ceir.gov.in
  • On the homepage, look for the option of “Unblock found mobile” and click on it.

  • A new page for putting in the request will open, enter details like Request ID, mobile number, the reason for wanting to unblock, and then verify your identity by entering the OTP that will be sent to your mobile number. Then click on “submit”
  • The device will be un-blocked within 24 hours of filling in the request form.
